Start the Weekend with Chittering Dogs!

Start the weekend with chittering painted dogs!

Join me to hear Dr Greg Rasmussen of the Painted Dog Research Trust talk about the unique, endangered and beautiful Painted Dog (African wild dog). Dr Rasmussen will talk about the years he has spent with painted dogs and the challenges facing them, particularly in Zimbabwe.

I recently spent time with Dr Rasmussen in Mana Pools, Zimbabwe, and we were fortunate to see 2 different dog packs, including 1 successfully hunting impala. Sketching painted dogs on a kill is not something you get to do everyday! And then we were able to visit the remains of the kill and watch Dr Rasmussen take bone marrow samples from the legs of the impala. (Obviously these dogs were fairly well-fed, as often there is barely a scrap left after they have finished eating, let alone enough to take bone marrow samples from front and rear legs!)

Sitting around the campfire we listened to spotted hyenas, watched for elephants in the dark next to our tents, and heard more from Dr Rasmussen about life as a painted dog conservationist. It was an experience not to missed. And I urge you not to miss this opportunity to hear him speak about his life and work with painted dogs!

So join me on Saturday (and you’ll also have a chance to win a limited edition field sketch of painted dogs from my last visit to southern Africa)!

I just returned from Africa, where I was fortunate to see and sketch several packs of painted dogs (African wild dogs). It will be great to continue sketching canids, and to compare their different body shapes.

My next wolf sketching session will be in the spring. Hopefully you can join me then!

A Frozen Valentine

Given the frigid temperatures in the Eastern United States at the moment, I’m sure there are plenty of frozen valentines to be found, but this post is about a very specific species of valentine…

Earlier this week I was stomping around in the snow with the wolves up at the Wolf Conservation Center. It was a beautiful winter day, cold and sunny. Lovely blue tree shadows crossed the banks of snow and every now and again a wolf could be seen trotting tirelessly in the distance. Eventually 6 male wolves were captured and transported in crates to meet Dr Cheri Asa and Karen Bauman from the Saint Louis Zoo.

Yes, the time had come for the wolves to give semen samples to be frozen and stored at the St Louis Zoo sperm bank, where they can accessed in the future for breeding purposes or genetic research.

There were 4 Mexican gray wolves and 2 red wolves. It was a very interesting experience, helping to capture the wolves, watching the vets at work, seeing semen samples under the microscope and sketching while the work was underway.

It was quite difficult sketching the wolves because there were so many people working around the table. So at one point I decided to sketch the team instead of the wolf!

I have had a terrible time writing this post because all kinds of jokes in very poor taste kept springing from my keyboard! But suffice it to say that the wolves are now back in their wooded enclosures with their mates, loving the frigid temperatures. And a little part of them will be returning to St Louis to help with the conservation of these vital predators!

Happy Valentine’s Day!!

Until next time…

Canids, Canids, Canids…!

All the chatter this week has been about canids.
Yes, canids.
Not canines – they are teeth!

First, I met with Dr Gregory Rasmussen of the Painted Dog Research Trust, hearing about his plans for PDRT, seeing a slide presentation then, just today, listening to a webinar he gave for the Africa Biodiversity Collaborative Group.

Secondly, I do of course have my very own canid at home. A German Shepherd called Chase (he’s well named).

And tomorrow I’ll be stomping around in the snow and the cold with the wolves up at the Wolf Conservation Center. More of that on Friday!

But despite all the canid connections, I’m working on a leopard painting right now…
More of that soon too!

Until next time…

Last night I and my artwork attended Wine & Wolves, the annual benefit for the Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem. Atka the ambassador Arctic wolf made an appearance and decided my art was worth a closer look!

If you would like to see more of the art that Atka approved of, you can check it out on my website: www.ArtInspiredbyAfrica.com. Don’t forget to take a look at my Seasonal Offers which are available until the end of December.
